Careers are made out of careful planning which means having the right mindset early on and the right kind of education. But you will notice that hardly anyone of us land our dream job with the exception of lucky few. So why is that? You did everything by the book but why is it you don’t succeed.
There could be a number of reasons that could lead you to work in a not so dream job or it could simply boil down to your luck. Whatever the reason, the tips that follow holds true for the most part and by means of which you can still make it to the top of the career ladder.
The best career is the one in which you’re using the skills you enjoy
Indeed, the best career would be where you are actively engaged in employing your strongest suit. If any limitation or difficulty arises in that job you should take it up as a challenge and put all your efforts to figure out what caused the problem and why couldn’t you do it earlier.
Not every job require your passions. Even if you find yourself in a job which you are not comfortable with, consider this an opportunity to learn something fresh and keep an open mind. With time you will get work that will resonate with your passion.
Don’t take your career too seriously
The history is riddled with personalities who started in the jobs they loathed but then went on to discover their passions and not only found the desired jobs for themselves but laid down the groundwork for new employment opportunities for the generations to come.
So point being, professional development is not as linear as you would like it to be. Only hard work and persistence is linear. As long as you hold onto those two, it is only a matter of time before you land the job that you will make a career in. In the start, not many are aware as to where their forte lie but as they progress, it all becomes abundantly clear. Only this time you’ll have experience and skills to go with it!
Every person you meet is a potential door to a new opportunity
Personally or professionally whoever you meet in life open new doors of opportunity. Thus, always try to maintain good terms with people around, you never know who will prove to be of help. So even if you are in a dispute with someone, never burn bridges instead try to reconcile.
Spend some time really thinking about your career
Every couple of years, try revisiting your career. By revisiting, I mean really think, is that what you want to be doing for the rest of your life or is it time for a change? Is the job making grow both personally and professionally or are you feeling stagnant in your current role? And the questions like that.
It is good practice to do a self-appraisal of one’s performance and of overall career. It enables you to see if there is some networking required. In this way, you can explore opportunities and make salary comparisons that what you are being paid is in line with the market slab etc.
Don’t be afraid to speak up in a meeting or to schedule a sit-down
Often people have a lot to say that they can bring to the table or in order to shape the outcomes but they remain mum, why? No one knows but what is for certain is that if they don’t speak up they will miss out on the chance to register themselves in the eyes of the management.
When you have something of value to bring to the cause, it is advisable that you do so because if the outcomes are adverse then it will be you who is going to feel responsible since you had the chance to steer the decision other way and you didn’t by staying quiet.
If you continue with this practice, you will never get to the top. Heck even if you don’t have some game changer idea, still make it a habit of speaking up in meetings or schedule one-on-ones with your boss to discuss the possibilities for your future growth.
Take criticism or “feedback” for what it is
Don’t take it personally. The majority of the employees take this personal. If you take this as a personal thing then it does not remain about your performance. Know that it the feedback or criticism is about your performance at your job and is not a personal grudge that your boss holds against you.
If such a thing happens then it is wrong because personal grudges aim to cloud your evaluation of the employee whereas it should be transparent focused primarily on his conduct during the job. So, whatever the feedback bad or good, just take it amend your ways if something requires amending or if it’s positive continue to maintain that momentum.
