Education institutes and universities in India are monitored under University Grants Commission (UGC). Universities in India are divided into four categories – Central, State, Private and Deemed which are all controlled by and administered under the UGC Act of 1956. Autonomous degrees, another category of university which are independently managed by its recruitment faculty IIT, IIM, AIIMS, etc. are some prominent examples of autonomous degrees in India. Central universities alias Union universities in India are established by Act of Parliament and are monitored under the authority of Department of Higher Education a division in Union Human Resource Development Ministry, India.
Indian universities are well acclaimed and have significantly proven their worth by producing some best students. As of June 29th 2017, there are 47 total central universities in India. Uttar Pradesh, a state in India has the most number of universities – six being the count in reference. Almost all states in India have central universities situated in them except for Goa and Andhra Pradesh.

IGNOU is a central university which is situated in Maidan Garhi, New Delhi. This central university is named after India’s former Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi. The formation and aim of IGNOU was to offer higher education to the Indian population with the distance learning or Open Education facility. Motto of IGNOU ‘The People’s University’ determines to serve education to all segments of society. Indira Gandhi National Open University was established in 1985 and has been recognised in many parts around the world.
Indira Gandhi National Open University administers around 67 regional centres, 21 schools, 2667 study centres, and 29 overseas centres with several institutes, division and research units is claimed to be world’s largest university. The central university which provides distance learning and affiliated education to more 4 Million students. IGNOU has served over 4 million students in India along with other 40 countries in the world. The chancellor of IGNOU is the President of India, Ram Nath Kovind and is run by the central government of India.
- Banaras Hindu University (BHU)
Banaras Hindu University formerly known as Central Hindu College is a public central university situated in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh. BHU was established in 1916. Banaras Hindu University is known to have the biggest residential university in Asia. BHU administers over 28,000 students in its institutes, faculties, interdisciplinary schools and research centres. The university is affiliated with 5 colleges and 4 schools as of December 2018.
- Delhi University (DU)
Delhi University is a collegiate public central university situated in the capital city of India, Delhi. It is considered to be India’s largest institution for higher studies and one among world’s largest institute. DU has 16 faculties and 86 academic departments with 77 colleges. DU was formed and established in the year 1922. Departments of Chemistry, Zoology, Sociology, History and Geology of DU University are awarded with the status of Centres of Advanced Studies.
The alumnus and alumni of DU include several artists who speak in favour of the university’s acclaimed quality of education. The faculty alumni of the university include some famous political figures of India. The university offers under graduation and post graduation programs along with being recognised and affiliated with various colleges in India.
- Indian Maritime University (IMU)
IMU is central university which was established in the year 2008. The university focuses on marine subjects and has 6 campuses in India namely Cochin, Vishakhapatnam, Mumbai Port, Navi Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata. IMU is also affiliated with several colleges around India. Indian Marine University has lent their sincere support for Marine studies all over India.
Visva-Bharati is a public central university situated in Santiniketan, West Bengal. It was by Rabindranath Tagore in 1921 which was then a college but soon after independence it was announced as a central university. An interesting fact about the college: Rabindranath Tagore used his Nobel Prize money into expanding a school to a college and renamed it as Visva-Bharati. Eventually, it became one of the most known places for higher education.
The university is divided into institutes, colleges, school and departments. The university was also declared as ‘An Institution of National Importance’ by act of Parliament. Several notable alumni’s have graduated from this university. The chancellor of Visva-Bharati is the Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi.
All the universities have been established by the Central Universities Act, 2009 and are directly funded by the Government of India.
